Acclaimed director Pablo Larraín’s Maria will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 29. Academy Award-winning actor Angelina Jolie will star as renowned opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, a new film from director Pablo Larraín. Jolie earned an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted, and has displayed her incredible range in films like Changeling, The Good Shepherd, Maleficent, and Those Who Wish Me Dead. Renowned Chilean filmmaker Larraín is known for such films as Jackie, Spencer, No, Neruda, and 2023’s El Conde, which garnered a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination for Edward Lachman’s chiaroscuro work. Larraín says, “I’m excited to partner again with the Netflix team who care so passionately about movies. This film is my most personal work yet. It is a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences worldwide like Maria did with her life.” Maria marks a new collaboration between Larraín and Lachman, who was also nominated for Academy Awards for his work on Carol and Far From Heaven. And it’s the second Larraín film written by Steven Knight following their work together on Spencer; Knight was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Screenplay for his work on Dirty Pretty Things, and is the creator of Peaky Blinders. Academy Award nominee Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino also star. What is Maria about? As Larraín says, Maria is a “creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas,” one of the greatest opera singers of all time, during her final days in 1970s Paris. Callas, whose life spanned from the 1920s to the ’70s, was famous for her incredible voice — the film looks at a period in her life when she had lost her voice, and tries to regain it. After dedicating her life to audiences around the world, she “decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself.” It marks the third film in Larraín’s work exploring iconic women at inflection points in their lives, following 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer.

Angelina Jolie, Jenna Ortega and Sigourney Weaver have arrived in Venice ahead of the city's annual Film Festival which begins on Wednesday.Actress Angelina, 49, looked as chic as ever in a beige trench coat ahead of the screening for her new film Maria - a biographical drama film about opera singer Maria Callas.Her ex-husband Brad Pitt is also expected to be at the festival later in the week for his new film Wolfs which he stars in with George Clooney. Jenna, 21, who stars in the Beetlejuice sequel which will open the festival, looked gorgeous in a pleated miniskirt and checked blazer as she arrived ahead of the 81st Venice Film Festival.Her onscreen mother in the movie Winona Ryder, 52, who reprises her role as Lydia, was also spotted arriving but hid her face under a visor hat and was sporting a bizarre chin strap.Sigourney meanwhile happily greeted fans, whilst looking chic in a pair of white wide-legged trousers and a boater hat. Maria is an upcoming biographical drama film about opera singer Maria Callas. It is directed by Pablo Larraín, written by Steven Knight, produced by Fremantle, and stars Angelina Jolie in the title role, with Valeria Golino as her sister Yakinthi, and Haluk Bilginer as Aristotle Onassis.Meanwhile Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will open the festival on August 28.Jenna recently opened up about what it was like meeting Winona Ryder for the first time on the set of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.The Wednesday star plays Astrid Deetz, the daughter of Ryder's character Lydia Deetz in the film. 'She was so warm and welcoming and kind and inviting right from the jump, and I couldn't be more grateful,' Ortega explained in an interview with the New York Times.'It was at a time where my career was taking a different turn, and I didn't realize that I needed that from somebody who could relate, but I did,' she said, adding that she was in a 'transformative' period in her life after shooting to overnight superstardom on Netflix's Wednesday. The Venice Film Festival has announced that “Maria,” the Maria Callas biopic by Pablo Larraín will premiere in competition this September.The film stars Angelina Jolie as the famed diva alongside Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.According to IMDB, “Maria” follows the life story of the world’s greatest opera singer, Maria Callas, during her final days in 1970s Paris.This is the latest Larrain film to open at Venice following “El Conde” where he won Best Screenplay, “Spencer” starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, and “Jackie” with Natalie Portman as Kennedy Onassis debuted in Venice. Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh hired and paid for her own lawyer when she filed to drop the Pitt name on her 18th birthday.Family sources confirm that Shiloh, who turned 18 on May 27, was in the driver’s seat when it came to dropping ‘Pitt’ from her surname ‘Jolie Pitt.’ A source close to the matter said: ‘Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn’t know and can’t speak for it. Documents to change Shiloh's name were lodged on Monday when she turned 18 – the earliest opportunity she could do so independently. The revelation that Shiloh paid herself suggests that the ugly spat between former couple Brad Pitt, 60, and Angelina Jolie, 48, may still rumble on in the form of legal action from the six children the couple once shared. There were suggestions in supermarket magazines last month that Shiloh was planning to move in with her father as soon as she could. And other stories suggested that movie star Pitt was ‘hopeful’ of reconciling with her now that she is an adult. However in truth there seems zero prospect that he will reconcile with his children following a notorious and disputed private jet confrontation in 2016. An FBI report into the incident published in 2022 saw Jolie accuse Pitt of physical assault while flying to California.She accused her ex of grabbing her by the head and shoulders and shaking her while yelling 'You're f**king up this family.'The report also saw Brad accused of punching the ceiling of the jet four times, snarling at his children and pouring beer on Angelina. Brad was also accused of attacking one of the couple's children on the plane, but was later cleared of wrongdoing by the LAPD. There have been long custody battles which ended eventually in a victory for Pitt, who got 50-50 custody in 2021 only to have it overturned on appeal.He’s had a judge intervene to tell Angelina she mustn’t listen in on his mobile phone calls with the children. The judge has also ordered ‘reunification therapy’ for Pitt and the kids.
The actor set up a skate park in his home for Shiloh, and more recently an art studio to reflect their common interest in art.He’s sent cars and security to ferry the children from her home to his whenever there is an allotted custody visit. Sadly, none of it has brought them closer.In fact son Pax said in an Instagram post in 2016 that all four of the youngest children – that’s including Shiloh – ‘tremble with fear in his presence.’ The two elder ones were at that point already declining point blank to see him.The current situation has seen the children - Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh 18, and Knox and Vivienne, 15 - form a tight gang of seven with his former wife.Last year Jolie called them 'the closest people to me in my life, and they’re my close friends. We had to heal. There are things we needed to heal from.’ While Shiloh has repeatedly walked red carpets with her famous actress mother, neither she nor her siblings have done the same for Brad. He will often say how proud he is of Shiloh – but clearly the feeling is not mutual.‘This is the result of textbook parental alienation, and it is a great sadness in him life,’ I am told. ‘There have been years and years of (Angelina) telling and retelling the same lies about (Brad) and the reality is that she has alienated the kids, and the reality is that it is upsetting to Brad. He cares about all of them. It is devastating.’ nBeing a father was hugely important to him. He could now start a family with his serious girlfriend Ines de Ramon who now lives with him. Vivienne has been working this spring with Angelina on a musical, The Outsiders in New York and is credited as simply ‘Vivienne Jolie’ in the programme. Maddox and Pax are openly antipathetic towards their father, having not used the Pitt name for years. It seems he has been totally cut out.

Angelina Jolie has hinted that she wants to quit acting for good - while revealing that she plans to leave 'unhealthy' Los Angeles and 'spend more time' in Cambodia after 'losing the ability to travel freely' amid her bitter divorce battle with Brad Pitt.The actress, 48, spoke out about her dislike of Hollywood in WSJ. Magazine's new December/January issue, explaining that she believes it is a 'shallow' place, and admitting that she would likely never have become an actress if she was entering the industry today. She explained that she wants to move away as soon as she can to instead live in her home in Asia - but not until her ongoing legal battle with her ex finds a resolution.The pair started dating in 2005 and married in 2014, but split two years later, in 2016 - and since then, they have been embroiled in a lengthy, seven-year divorce proceeding over the custody of their six kids. Angelina told WSJ. Magazine that the court battle has lead to her 'losing the ability to live and travel freely.''It’s part of what happened after my divorce - I lost the ability to live and travel as freely,' she said. 'I will move when I can. 'I grew up in quite a shallow place. Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.'Angelina - whose parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, were both actors themselves - added that because 'she grew up around' Hollywood, she was 'never very impressed' with it.'I never bought into it as significant or important,' she told the publication.She admitted that if she were to start all over today, she likely wouldn't choose acting as her profession, because of the 'expectation' to share intimate details about her personal life that comes with being a famous person.
She added, 'When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.'She also joked that she 'doesn't really have a social life' anymore and that all of her 'closest friends are refugees.' 'There’s a reason people who have been through hardship are also much more honest and much more connected, and I am more relaxed with them,' she said. 'Why do I like spending time with people who’ve survived and are refugees? They’ve confronted so much in life that it brings forward not just strength, but humanity.'Angelina has been embroiled in arguably one of the most public breakups of all time, with the entire world watching on as she and ex Brad, 59, have battled it out in court over the last seven years.She briefly spoke out about the dissolvement of her marriage of WSJ, while opening up about why she decided to step back from the spotlight in recent years.'We had to heal.
