Angelina Jolie visits Syrian border

Jaber border crossing, Jordan--Along a dirt track on an unexpectedly cool and windy night on Jordan's border with Syria, as shadows lengthened across the barren hills, UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie listened to the stories of men women and children who had fled Syria just hours before. She heard stories of bombs and pain and loss from people fleeing Homs, Dara'a and Qusair, three of the communities devastated by the Syrian conflict. Ms. Jolie encouraged the refugees to tell her, and through her the world, of their ordeal. "We can't know your pain," Ms. Jolie said at one point, speaking to families who had lost their loved ones. But she listened.Ms. Jolie is in Jordan to mark World Refugee Day, which each year is commemorated on June 20. She and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, arrived in the country on 18 June. Mr Guterres started his visit to the region in Lebanon, where he met with refugees and government officials. In Jordan, he and Ms. Jolie will meet with the government and refugees living in Jordan's cities, as well as in the sprawling Za'atri refugee camp. The purpose of her visit, said Ms. Jolie, is "to show support for Syria's refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict."At the Syrian border, Ms. Jolie heard stories of great courage and sadness. Mohammed Al-Kassem, his wife Walida and their young daughter Faten had just arrived after escaping from Qusair, the site of a bitter battle which left the town in rubble and unleashed a new wave of refugees into neighbouring countries. "In the battles and bombing, most of my friends died," he said. "There is nothing left, all was destroyed, no buildings, no medicines. Ninety five men died because their wounds became infected and there was nothing to treat them with. I was the only one of my family to escape. Those who could not flee can only wait for death."
After meeting with refugees, Ms Jolie was briefed by Maj. General Hussein Al-Zyoud, the commander of the Jordan Border Security Forces, and his staff. As they talked, shelling just across the border in Syria could be clearly heard. The war in Syria forced more people to flee last year than any other conflict in the world. In the last six months the number has more than doubled to 1.6 million, of whom 540,000 are in Jordan."The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today," said Ms. Jolie. "By the end of this year half of Syria's population – ten million people – are expected to be displaced and in desperate need."She urged the world to do much more to help the people of Syria. "The international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy," she said. "Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found."

Angelina Jolie addresses G8 summit

Angelina Jolie is continuing to urge action of behalf of wartime sexual assault victims. She spoke today at the G8 Foreign Ministers meeting in London. The Human Rights and Communications team at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office followed what Jolie said at a news conference and tweeted her quotes, most of which were followed by "#timetoact." Here is some of what she said:"Hundreds of thousands of women and children have been sexually assaulted in the wars of our generation. But wartime rape is not inevitable. This violence can be prevented, and it must be confronted. I have heard survivors of rape from Bosnia to (the Congo) say that the world simply does not care about them. But today I believe that their voices have been heard, and that we finally have some hope to offer them." She said, "It is encouraging to see men in leadership positions speaking out against rape. Rape is not a women's issue, or a humanitarian issue, it is a global issue."

Angelina Jolie Honors Malala Yousafzai and Donates $200,000 to Malala Fund

At the Women in the World Summit, Jolie made an emotional tribute to the young Pakistani activist—who made a special appearance via video to talk about her new education fund.At the close of the first day of the Women in the World Summit Thursday night, Angelina Jolie presented Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot in the head by the Taliban last year because of her impassioned advocacy for girls education. Following the horrific attack, Vital Voices, with a donation from the Women in the World Foundation, established the Malala Fund to be directed by the 15-year-old. In a video address, a miraculously healthy-looking Malala announced that she will use the fund to help with the schooling of girls in Pakistan.“This is the happiest moment of my life,” Malala told the audience, adding, “If we can educate 40 girls, we can educate 40 million girls.”Jolie recounted the horrific circumstances of Malala’s attack, which the young girl said she had almost been expecting. Malala had nightmares about the possibility, Jolie said, and vowed that if the Taliban attempted to kill her she would “tell them that what they were trying to do was wrong, that education is our basic right.”During her hospital stay in London, Malala's father told her that a newspaper poll named her the sixth-most-influential person in the world. The seventh was President Obama. When her father asked if that made her feel good, Malala replied, “No. I don’t think human beings should be categorized."After Jolie, who is the special envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, left the stage, Tina Brown announced that the actress had recently made a personal donation of $200,000 to the fund.“The only thing that mattered to Malala was school,” Jolie told the packed audience at the Women in the World Summit. “They shot her at point-blank range in the head—and made her stronger.

Angelina Jolie opens all-girls school in Afghanistan

Angelina Jolie's big heart has made an even bigger difference: The UNHCR Goodwill ambassador exclusively confirms to E! News that she has opened a school in Afghanistan. Jolie chose to fund the girls-only primary school in an area just outside of Kabul, a region that traditionally favors boys' education over girls'.Angelina picked the village as the site of the school due to its high refugee population — regional fighting caused many locals to flee when their homes were destroyed, but since the collapse of the Taliban regime, families are slowly starting to return to the once-devastated area.).The school itself currently educates between 200 and 300 girls and has already proven to have a huge impact on the local community.Meanwhile, Jolie's not stopping there, and already has plans to open other similar institutions, vowing that this will be just the first of many. As for how Brad Pitt's fiancée is bankrolling her goodwill gesture, Jolie is releasing her personally designed jewelry collection, the Style of Jolie, to retail stores for the first time. She will use the profits from the line's no doubt hefty sales to build even more schools around the world."Beyond enjoying the artistic satisfaction of designing these jewels, we are inspired by knowing our work is also serving the mutual goal of providing for children in need," Jolie told E! News exclusively. And how can you get your hands on the Jolie-designed range? The newly expanded collection will go on sale this week. And 100 (yes, 100) percent of the profits will go towards Jolie's new foundation, The Education Partnership for Children of Conflict.Jolie and her long-term jewelry designer, Robert Procop, have spent years collaborating on the collection."We launched this collaborative collection with the intent that 100 percent of the profits will go to charity," Procop said. "The intention was to create something beautiful but more importantly to provide children an opportunity to have an education."The beauty of these creations is matched by the beauty of spirit behind Angelina's most heartfelt mission—to empower children in crisis. The first funds from our collaboration together have been dedicated to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict and we have recently completed a school in Afghanistan.
"For me it's an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of creating this line with Angie, as we both believe every child has a right to an education."Many of the pieces in the collection are based on a unique design Jolie created for a necklace she gifted to Pitt—a historic tablet shape. As for the rest of the line, Angelina spent countless hours exploring coloring, gemstones and different shapes she was drawn to."These designs are timeless; they reflect her chic sense of style and also feminine strength," Kam Heskin, the spokesman for the Robert Procop Design Studio, told E! News. "There are so many pieces that make this collection beautiful and unique."The Style of Jolie will be available exclusively in Tivol, a Kansas City jeweler. Tivol will be holding a special event to launch the collection this Wednesday."Tivol, with their historic reputation and dedication to family values is a wonderful retail partner to launch our collection in the U.S.," Jolie told E! News."Tivol is a quality company known for carrying high-end jewelry brands that has been family-owned for several generations," Procop added. "The Tivol family has been so gracious and instrumental in planning this event."
