She made one of the hardest choices a woman could ever make, but each day her struggle is rewarded with more time with the one she loves.A day after opening up about her drastic surgeries to try to stop herself from getting cancer, Angelina Jolie got to enjoy time with three of the reasons behind her decision. The 40-year-old actress was seen with her husband Brad Pitt and their twins Vivienne and Knox in New York on Tuesday. While the Hollywood family have everything at their fingertips, clearly the two stars are trying to foster a love of the simple things in their children. The couple took the seven-year-olds to a local bookstore, so that they could enjoy some traditional unplugged in entertainment. And the two seven-year-old's certainly found a lot to their liking, leaving the store with a bag of books each, and Brad also carried an additional bag perhaps for their other children Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10 and Shiloh, nine.Holding on to Vivienne's hand as she walked into the store, Angelina looked content and at peace despite hers and Brad's emotional interview about her battle to break free from her family's tragic history. As always, the Tomb Raider star looked simply stunning in a long black trench which she wore cinched in at her waist. But as the sun came out, the director opened up up her jacket to reveal she was wearing a V-neck T-shirt tucked into the waist band of a long pencil skirt. The star added a plan black handbag, high heeled ankle boots and a pair of large aviator sunglasses. Brad also showed off his penchant for monochromatic ensembles, wearing washed out black jeans with a matching coat, shirt and even scarf. While leading the way on Tuesday, Brad said it is his wife who is the strongest in their family. In an interview released on Monday by Today, the Fury actor praised his wife and her strength.'There was no vanity to my wife's approach,' the 51-year-old said. 'It was mature.' 'There was a strength in that. It was just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter and she was doing it for the kids, and she was doing it for her family so we could be together.'Angelina had the double mastectomy at the age of 37, after learning that she had an 87 per cent risk of developing breast cancer due to a defective BRCA1 gene. Due to the same anomaly, she had a 50 per cent risk of developing ovarian cancer and decided to get the oophorectomy two years later, which brought upon early menopause.
Angelina's mother, who was also an actress, Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999. 'We had some of the same nurses, some of the same doctors,' the star told Tom Brokaw. Angelina said her mother, who passed away from cancer, had a secret pact with her surgeon.'So, the doctor that did my ovary surgery was my mother's doctor. And apparently my mother had said to her, "Promise me you will take Angie's ovaries out." So when we kind of got together, we both had a big cry, and she said, "I promised your mother, and I gotta do this."' The actress turned writer-director also discussed in the same interview how her new film By The Sea, which co-stars Brad, was inspired by her grief over losing her mother.'We can't say what the whole film is about, but a lot of the film was when I went to visit my mom in the hospital, when she found out she had cancer the first time, she was gonna have her ovaries removed, (and) she was very upset, feeling like... they're taking out her parts that were female, and there was a woman down the hall who was wailing. 'I later found out it was a young woman who had not had children yet, and that put everything into perspective. 'Every woman is different when they go through menopause, and...I didn't know emotionally how I would feel,' the star admitted. 'I knew the breast would be a bigger surgery and physically changing. The ovaries is more, your hormones changing and your emotions changing, but it's different. You feel different.'
The experience, meanwhile, only strengthened her marriage to Brad. 'She was doing it for the kids,' the actor said proudly of his wife, 'and she was doing it for her family so we could be together.''I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was gonna feel less of a woman because my husband wasn't gonna let that happen,' the Salt star explained. 'To face these issues together and speak about them and talk about what it is to be human, I think can be a beautiful thing.'By The Sea will mark the first film the two have collaborated on since Mr. And Mrs, Smith (2005), where the duo fell in love. Angelina said of their new film: 'We were joking... We were saying, like... "See, this is the beginning. And then this is 10 years later. This is what 10 years of marriage will do to you."'The couple, who have six children, married in August 2014 after nine years together, and spent their honeymoon filming new drama By The Sea on the Maltese island of Gozo. However she is quick to point out that the story – about a couple whose marriage is on the brink of collapse – is not based on their own relationship.‘I'm counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film,’ Angelina explained. ‘It's because we're actually very, very stable and these aren't our issues.’A new trailer for the 1970s set drama was released on Friday, but doesn’t give too much away. With no dialogue, the clip still shows plenty of tense moments between the volatile characters, with Roland (Brad) getting aggressive and Vanessa (Angelina) popping pills.By The Sea will be released in the US on November 13 and the UK on December 11..

Angelina Jolie Pitt breaks down the exclusive new By the Sea trailer

Earlier this year, Angelina Jolie Pitt told EW that writing, directing and starring in By the Sea (in theaters Nov. 13) was made easier thanks to her leading man, husband Brad Pitt.“It was comforting in that he’s a great actor and we produced it together. So we were creating together and we were partners in making it. We were there to lean on each other,” she said. “But, of course, it comes with wanting to make sure I do right by him. The pressure of making sure that I was doing a good enough job because I care about this actor more than other actors! It was an emotionally charged set — even though the characters are very different from us, when you act you still express real emotion.” A closer look at those real (and raw) feelings are on display in the film’s latest trailer. Set in France in the mid-70s, By the Sea follows Roland and Vanessa (Pitt and Jolie Pitt), a couple going through a difficult period while together at a picturesque hotel.“I wanted to suggest and guide and give hints to the audience but not bore them or reveal all before the film itself,” Jolie Pitt writes in an email to EW about the new By the Sea trailer, which debuts exclusively above. “I like trailers that don’t explain the whole film; that tell you exactly what to expect.” As for the plot and what Roland and Vanessa are grappling with, Jolie Pitt prefers to give viewers a sense of the tone and tenor of her new film, her third feature as director.“It isn’t my intention to hide anything from the audience, but the film is a complicated adult drama where things are often not what they seem,” she writes. “The voyeurism for example, most people will assume only that it is titillating. But it has deeper resonance to the story. I like films that leave questions and cause discussion.” EW asked Jolie PItt what she hopes audiences will take away from seeing this new trailer. “This trailer hints at one of the bolder aspects in the narrative. But what will they take away? I’m not sure,” she writes. “I hope they are curious and that when they see the film they find it interesting. That’s all I can hope for.”By the Sea, which will have its world premiere at the AFI Fest next week, is out on Nov. 13. Watch the new trailer above.

Angelina Jolie may be one of the biggest stars in the world, but that doesn’t make her a diva. The 40-year-old happily wheeled her own suitcase as she arrived into LAX airport on Tuesday, with the four eldest of her six children.Angelina was joined by Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, and nine-year-old Shiloh, and the kids all wore their own backpacks. Not seen were the actress’s husband Brad Pitt and their seven-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. While the famous family own a private jet, they decided to fly on a commercial airline and were seen strolling out of the terminal with all their luggage, alongside everybody else.Angelina picked one of her go-to looks – a simple but stylish all-black ensemble. The Oscar winner sported a long-sleeved top tucked into tapered trousers, and had kept her feet comfortable for the long journey in loafers.Angelina tied her long, chestnut brown locks into a ponytail and appeared to be make-up free under her oversized glasses. The star’s children were all dressed in comfortable, casual clothing.Angelina, Brad and their youngsters were in Cambodia earlier this month, which is Maddox’s birth place. The family were spotted in Siem Reap, researching locations for Angelina’s upcoming Netflix movie First They Killed My Father, which she co-wrote and will direct. Maddox himself will be heavily involved in the production of the film - a deliberate attempt by his mother to ensure he connects with the country of his birth.'As Maddox and I prepare the film we will be side by side learning about his country,' Jolie explained earlier this year.'He is 14 and this is a very important time for him to understand who he is. He is my son but he is also a son of Cambodia.'This is the time for our family to understand all that that means to him and to us.'
The mother-of-six chose as her subject for the new movie a harrowing memoir by Cambodian human rights activist Loung Ung First.Shot through the eyes of a war-scarred child, the film throws the spotlight on Cambodia's devastating 1970s holocaust under the communist Khmer Rouge - which is blamed for the deaths of 1.7 million people.Angelina hopes working on the film will give Maddox a greater understanding of his identity as he reaches adulthood. The devoted humanitarian has travelled to Cambodia on numerous occasions to do research for the film, which will begin filming on location next month.'My desire to tell this story in the most truthful and accurate way possible will be my tribute to the strength and dignity of all Cambodian people,' she said. The actress has been fascinated with the country ever since she filmed 2001 hit action movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider at Cambodia's famous Angkor Wat temple complex. In 2002 she adopted Maddox, then aged just seven months, from an orphanage in western Cambodia. Her now husband Brad jointly adopted Maddox in 2006, changing his surname to Jolie-Pitt.In 2005, Angelia was granted Cambodian citizenship by royal decree in recognition of her environmental work in the Southeast Asian nation. She has set up the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which focuses on poverty and environmental programs, and recently revealed Maddox, now 14, would be taking over her duties when he's old enough. The actress has tried her hand at directing before, starting in 2011 with Bosnian war drama In The Land of Blood and Honey and then when she tackled the Louis Zamperini biopic Unbroken last year. Her most recent directorial effort, By The Sea, is to be released this year and stars both her and Brad Pitt for the first time since they fell in love on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith.
