Das menschenfressende Monster Grendel (Crispin Glover) terrorisiert den Hof von König Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) und seiner Gattin Wealthow (Robin Wright Penn). Niemand hat es bisher vermocht, das Ungetüm zu töten. Verzweifelt lobt Hrothgar – gegen den Widerstand seines Beraters Unferth (John Malkovich) – die Hälfte der königlichen Schatzkammer für denjenigen Helden aus, der Grendel zur Strecke bringt. Angelockt vom Gold – aber vor allem von seinem Streben nach Ruhm und Ehre – reist der mächtige Krieger Beowulf (Ray Winstone) gemeinsam mit seiner rechten Hand Wiglaf (Brendan Gleeson) und seinen tapferen Kriegern in Hrothgars Königreich, um sich der Herausforderung zu stellen. Was sie zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht wissen: Hrothgars Herrschaft steht in unheilvoller Verbindung zu einem Dämonen (Angelina Jolie), der sich mittlerweile zu einem Fluch entwickelt hat...
